What does Reading Apprenticeship Look like?

We used the lesson sharing protocoal (Binder: Clear Tab, p. 51-53) to see what a Reading Apprenticeship Classroom looks like.

 

You could use this protocol on your campus with your teammates to get a glimpse into your classroom and get feedback about how your lessons are communicating.

What does a reading apprenticeship classroom sound like?

"When I started using think aloud and collaborative meaning making, some teachers commented, 'Your classroom is so lively. What are you doing?'  Others would say, 'Well, your class was off task today, huh?'"

Questions:

  • How does a Reading Apprenticeship instructor monitor the metacognition happening in the class?

  • How should individual work, pair work, and group work be structured for success?

  • How should norms be set in your classroom?
