Classroom Videocase -  Lilit Haroyan

Binder: Clear Tab, p.13-25

We watched the videocase specifically looking for the good teacher moves that Lilit made, and the student moves toward understanding.

  • How do the things we noticed (in the chart below) connect to the document, "What Does a Reading Apprenticeship Classroom Look Like?" from the pre-reading (red tab, last page)?

Guiding Question:

Good Teacher Moves

Student Moves

"Lilit used her teacher influence like a scalpel, not a hammer.  She was incisive, providing it when it was needed."

"The students were the ones giving the answers, not the teacher.  They had to analyze and seek out the answers."

"She set up the Think Pair Share so that it was demanding.  The pairs pushed them to share and then they felt comfortable sharing in the groups."

"Lilit never told them 'which part is which part.'  She kept questioning them until they told her 'which part is which part.'"

"Students were practicing real scientific ways of thinking, using phrases like, 'I'm assuming that...' and making real hypotheses."

"They used phrases like, 'I didn't understand and '....., right?' -- I was so impressed that they were confident enough to express their confusion."
