I remember as a student tracking along with the teacher and the book, but still getting to the problem and not tracking along.

Because I'm a math person, I focused on the math things that I knew and tried to get started from that point.

I thought - I have a problem and a solution, so I thought I could learn something from it that I could apply with other problems.  I learned a new thing, too.  That I could set something to zero was new to me.  I tried to pull strategies out of the way that the problem was set up.
