How do we assess student learning?  What are we looking for?

How do we (formatively) assess where our students are and help them be ready to learn?

Like in the video, we realized that so much of the assessment of the student learning is not "Oh they solved the problem!" But it is some of the negotiation that we saw in the video about how they are managing their learning.

How often should we use the concept inventory?  Should it be before and after each topic?  Should it be a group discussion or an individual thing?

We are still thinking about how to balance the content and the use of the RA strategies.  We want to measure their content knowledge and what is happening with their learning.

Adding the layer of how confident someone is about their answer to the question adds the personal dimension to the concept inventory.  I'm curious about the concept inventories can be enriched to include more of the dimensions.

I want to use the model of the "feedback forms" from the seminar because that can be an assessment as well.  Asking them to keep track of what questions they have. I wonder if that would be more motivating than having a quiz at the beginning of the class.

I love to give a project where students do a writing assignment about each design project they do.  I ask them for barriers they overcame and to reflect on what went well.  Now, I want to be more intentional about what I put into these assignments.  And I am interested in doing this several times during the semester so that the growth aspect comes out.

Assessing Students

Thinking about assessment means thinking about what you want to assess.  Reading for Understanding has some ideas for assessing things related to Reading Apprenticeship on p. 318-330.  However, to assess content or complete a concept inventory will look different.  Post yourideas here:
